- Naughty Dog’s highly-anticipated The Last of Us Part II releases on June 3rd.
- Review copies are in the hands of the gaming press with many reporting initial impressions.
- The game will reportedly put the PS4 through its paces and push the hardware to its limits.
As one of two swan song releases lined up for the final months of the PS4 alongside Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Part II promises to harness the console’s full power.
Seven years of developers getting to grips with Sony’s console culminating in a game that fully embraces all its hardware potential. A final farewell exhibiting everything Sony’s revered black box has to offer.
The Last of Us closed off the PS3 era with one of the best looking games at the time, and Part II does very much the same for the PS4.
It’s poetic and a fitting end to arguably one of Sony’s best generations to date, but it sounds like The Last of Us Part II will quite literally push the PS4 to its limits.
The Last of Us Part II Puts the PS4 Through Its Paces
Washington Post reporter Gene Parks took to Twitter to share early impressions of time spent with a review copy. While restricted by an embargo limiting what can be shared, Park nevertheless had some telling news about how the PS4 handles churning out the game’s stunning visuals.
When asked whether the game causes the PS4 to ‘go too loud,’ Park explained that when running the game, the console pushed out more decibels than his air-con unit:
I can answer this finally lol!!!! I have a first model PS4 Pro. Vents are clean. During The Last of Us 2, the fans are louder than my air-conditioning unit. They were so loud I had to raise the volume up on my speakers. Even when I knocked it down to 1080p mode.
Park will have thrown in a bit hyperbole to stress the point, but the message is clear – The Last of Us Part II puts the PS4 Pro through its paces.
It’s safe to assume that a base PS4 model will react the same, if not worse. Anyone that owns the console is all too familiar with the jarring crescendo of fan whirring during particularly action-packed sequences and even menus with uncapped frame rates.
It might be worth investing in a pair of noise-canceling headphones ahead of TLOU2 launch on June 19.
