Philadelphia Joins Miami, NYC In City Government Blockchain Ambitions

Inspired by Miami’s launch of a city token — MiamiCoin — Mark Wheeler, the city of Philadelphia’s chief innovation officer, announced an initiative to bring blockchain and Web 3.0 technology to city governance.

Fast facts

  • Wheeler is currently conducting a discovery process to hold conversations with blockchain and Web 3.0 technology developers to understand the use cases and value proposition for the Philadelphia municipal government. The city’s website was also updated with a section on blockchain and Web 3.0-related resources.
  • Wheeler said his move was inspired by Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who sees MiamiCoin as a potential replacement for tax payments. Suarez has also arranged to receive his paycheck in Bitcoin. As of August, MiamiCoin has added over US$7 million to the city’s coffers.
  • New York City has crypto and blockchain aspirations as it launched NYCCoin this week, following Miami’s footsteps.
