Id Software Removes Denuvo Anti-Cheat in Doom Eternal

  • After proving to be massively unpopular, id software has removed Denuvo-Anti Cheat from Doom Eternal.
  • The reversing of the decision comes after a massive backlash and review bombing campaign.
  • Hopefully, this will deter companies from using Denuvo Anti-Cheat, or just Denuvo in general.

Almost a week ago, CCN.com reported on the terrible Denuvo Anti-Cheat coming to Doom Eternal. The system was so bad that it could break your computer if hackers used it right.

The addition understandably vexed players. Many of them just flat out refused to have the game installed on their system while Denuvo Anti-Cheat was in place.

Those people will probably be happy today. Id Software, creators of Doom, have backtracked spectacularly. Doom Eternal will soon no longer have Denuvo Anti-Cheat.

Good riddance.

Despite the backtrack, people are still upset that id decided to include the software in the first place. | Source: Twitter

Doom Eternal Is Better Off Without Anti-Cheat

If it’s not clear already, id made a boo-boo. It was an idiotic decision to go with any sort of Denuvo product. They’re laughably bad at creating DRM. Why id thought they’d do a better job at anti-cheating software is beyond me.

Either way, it seems like the decision has been reversed. Hopefully id thinks twice before doing something like this again in the future.

It also means I have to eat my own words. I thought that the review bombing wasn’t going to be effective, but clearly, I was wrong. I doubt that id would have bothered changing Doom Eternal if it wasn’t for the fan backlash across multiple platforms.

That Doesn’t Mean All Is Forgiven

This is the best decision for Doom Eternal. Removing an unpopular addition to the game can only do good things for the game’s PR. Having said that, it’s probably too late to avoid damaging id’s reputation.

After all, they decided to add it in the first place. As many have said before, the issues with Denuvo are well known. That’s why in all of 2020 so far only three games have released with the DRM installed. It’s honestly shocking companies are willing to trust them with anything at all.

Hopefully this will be the last we hear of Denuvo Anti-Cheat, but I doubt it. At least Doom Eternal players are free to re-install the game on their PCs again. That’s assuming they actually feel like playing the game anymore with that bad taste in their mouths.
