The consumer price index (CPI) for the month of November 2023 is 3.1%.
In October 2023, the CPI grew by 3.2% YoY while the median estimate was 3.3%. Over the previous 12 months, we could observe an interesting tendency. In 3 months, the CPI was higher than the median estimate. In 2 months, the index matched it. And in 7 months, it was lower than it.
Over the past 60 months (5 years), the CPI increased and surpassed the median estimate in 50% of cases, matched it in 15% of cases, and, consequently, was lower than the median estimate in 35% of cases.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics compiles the core Consumer Price Index (CPI) on a monthly basis. Unlike the median and trimmed mean indicators of underlying inflation, the core CPI attributes the fluctuations in an overall price index to specific items, namely, food and energy. The core CPI deliberately omits the prices of food and energy from the overall CPI calculation.
